There really weren’t any
other deities in the Islandverse that could be
classed as a "kindred spirit." Take
Shannonmouth for example, it was far too loud
and constantly in motion, which made Hurleyhair
afraid to get near lest it get caught. And
Jinwrist had seemed like it might be what Hurleyhair
was hoping for. But the one time Jinwrist tried
to get close, its shiny silver bracelet had gotten
hopelessly tangled in Hurleyhair and tugged wickedly.
Hurleyhair hadn’t been near Jinwrist since.
Jackback was the strong and sturdy type, something
that Hurleyhair, with its impulsive nature, respected
and admired. However, Jackback was always busy
and continually turned away. Boonebrows should
have been somewhat of a kindred spirit, but they
kept climbing up and away from Hurleyhair in
a most snobbish manner. Like they were so much
better than Hurleyhair? Not. Boonebrows could
keep their not-quite wild ways and take a hike
right off the Islandverse.
Hmmmm... Hurleyhair had found
Waltlaugh fun to spend time with. Unfortunately
Waltlaugh was no good at hide and seek. The same
went for Vincenttail, who had some visitors of
its own. Hurleyhair definitely wanted no part
of that! Suneyes were gorgeous but fretful, which
made Hurleyhair feel too wild and not a little
crazy when they were together. Katenose would
have been nice to spend time with, if only it
wasn’t so busy watching Sawyertummy and
Jackback. And though Hurleyhair was used to constant
motion, all that to-ing and fro-ing, back and
forth, made it the slightest bit nauseous. A
sick deity was not a happy deity. Now,
Sayidlips were very pretty. There was something
about the curve of them that spoke to Hurleyhair.
Of course, there was no chance for Hurleyhair
there, as Sayidlips spent all their time getting
up close and personal with Sawyertummy.
Speaking of Sawyertummy, Hurleyhair
would have enjoyed lazing away the days, spread
out across that smooth expanse of flesh, if only
Sayidlips wasn’t in the way. Hurleyhair
had thought about trying Lockelegs, even though
they’d never given Hurleyhair much time
to get to know them, what with all the walking
they were doing - just to prove they could.
But they really had very little in common. Besides,
Hurleyhair just couldn't see what was so great
about walking, no matter how much Lockelegs seemed
to enjoy it.
Sliding through the water, Hurleyhair
let the gentle lapping soothe away the stresses
of the day. There was a time when Charliefingers
would have been right here with Hurleyhair. Sighing,
Hurleyhair resigned itself to another evening
alone, drying to a frizz by the fire. Rising
up out of the water, Hurleyhair shook out the
bulk of the water, then nearly stood on end when
something crept through it. It felt like... like
Charliefingers! It was Charliefingers!
They’d come back! Hurleyhair curled with
glee as Charliefingers slowly combed their way
through, untangling and smoothing, until Hurleyhair
was little more than one big curl. There really
was nothing better than this, even if some of
the other deities felt it was more than a little
scandalous to be this close, this affectionate.
But Hurleyhair didn’t care, not while Charliefingers
were doing that. Hurleyhair didn’t
have a care in the world as long as it could
wrap itself around Charliefingers and hold on
tight. This was where Hurleyhair belonged - with
Charliefingers. And now they were together, all
was right with the Islandverse.
